CHOOSE YOUR NEXT STEP
- Motive: Leave Kyoto with one full morning of mountain green, temple space, bamboo sound, and river light.
- Route: Tenryu-ji, north gate, Bamboo Grove, Okochi Sanso, Kameyama Park, river, then Togetsukyo Bridge.
- Choice: Walk independently for a compact three-hour loop or book the selected five-to-six-hour tour when the temple, garden, monkey climb, admissions, and stories should arrive in one sequence.
- Condition: The selected tour ends at the monkey park after a steep 20-to-25-minute climb and is not wheelchair accessible.
Arashiyama disappoints when it becomes a single crowded bamboo photograph. Its real memory is a sequence: a Zen garden opens toward the mountains, bamboo closes around the path, Kameyama Park releases you toward the river, and Togetsukyo Bridge gives the landscape back its scale. The monkey park is an optional climb, not the price of admission to Arashiyama.
First decision: compact route or complete guided morning?
Freedom to stop before the climb
Walk the temple, bamboo, park, and river yourself
Choose this when three to four hours is enough and you want control over the monkey-park decision. The strongest self-guided line uses Tenryu-ji's north exit to enter the better part of the grove, continues through Okochi Sanso and Kameyama Park, then descends to the river and bridge.

Let one guide turn six famous stops into one story
Take the bamboo, gardens, bridge, and monkey walk
Choose this when you want Nonomiya Shrine, Okochi Sanso, the bamboo trail, Tenryu-ji garden, Togetsukyo Bridge, and Monkey Park handled as one route. Admissions and matcha at Okochi Sanso are included; lunch and pickup are not.

1. Start at Tenryu-ji, not the bridge
Arrive for the temple’s morning opening and begin with Sogenchi Garden. The mountains beyond the pond explain why Arashiyama became more than a scenic suburb. Exit through the north gate so the bamboo becomes the next scene rather than a separate attraction.
2. Cross the best section of the Bamboo Grove
The grove is a public path, not a controlled forest experience. Walk through once, listen, and keep moving when the path stalls for photographs. Kyoto’s official guidance asks visitors not to carve or damage the bamboo; damaged stalks cannot be restored.
3. Choose Okochi Sanso or a faster exit
Okochi Sanso earns time when garden, hillside views, and a quieter transition matter. If your morning is short, continue to Kameyama Park instead. Do not add every garden merely because it sits beside the grove.
4. Descend through Kameyama Park to the river
This is the release the famous bamboo photograph lacks. The route opens toward the Katsura River and lets you approach Togetsukyo with the mountains in view.
5. Decide at the bridge: finish or climb
Finish at Togetsukyo when the group has had enough walking, the weather is hot, or knees are uncertain. Choose Monkey Park only when everyone can manage a steep 20-to-25-minute uphill path plus the descent. The selected tour ends there, so the climb is not optional within that product.
Shrine, shopping, and food without losing the morning
Place the small shrine between Tenryu-ji and the bamboo path. It adds the area's Shinto story without sending you across the district.
Choose one useful bamboo item, local sweet, or small craft after the walk. Do not let the station street replace the landscape you traveled west to see.
Restaurants become busy. Book an early lunch near the bridge or buy picnic food before arriving and use an appropriate park space; do not eat while blocking the grove.
Kyoto's official guide points beyond the bridge-and-bamboo core to Saga Toriimoto, Daikaku-ji, Gio-ji, and Otagi Nenbutsu-ji. Choose one, not all four.
Time, crowds, rain, and heat
Best time
Use the morning. Tenryu-ji is listed by Kyoto’s official guide as opening at 8:30, while the grove itself does not have a gate. Enter the temple first, then the bamboo. Shops opening later is a good trade when quiet is the reason you came.
If it is crowded
Check Kyoto’s official congestion forecast and live-camera page before leaving. Enter from Tenryu-ji’s north side, keep Kameyama Park in the route, and skip the stationary photo queue. The landscape beyond the grove is not a consolation prize; it is the complete visit.
If it rains
Light rain can deepen the greens, but stone, roots, and the monkey-park slope become the decision. Keep Tenryu-ji, bamboo, and the river if footing is safe; drop the monkey climb first. In heavy rain, use the official forecast and venue notices rather than forcing the route.
If it is hot
Bring water before entering the route and use the shaded temple-and-grove sequence early. The selected tour is five to six hours and finishes with the steepest section. Summer reviewers repeatedly identify heat and the monkey climb as the main physical condition.
Getting there without losing the morning
From Kyoto Station, Kyoto’s official access guide recommends the JR Sagano Line to Saga-Arashiyama; rapid and local trains stop there, and the rapid trip is described as about 11 minutes. The platform is farther from the main concourse than many visitors expect, so leave transfer time. From downtown, Randen is slower but atmospheric. Avoid relying on a city bus through congested Shijo-dori when time matters.
